Class Observation

Class observation was introduced at DKU in Fall 2024 as part of a broader peer evaluation initiative supporting tenure, reappointment, and promotion reviews. It involves the structured review of classroom teaching and learning activities, with attention to instructional practices, student engagement, and learning environments. Used alongside other sources of information, class observation contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of teaching and learning.

The peer evaluation process was developed by a faculty-led Peer Evaluation Ad Hoc Committee in response to the need for additional, structured evidence of teaching quality. The committee reviewed peer evaluation practices at more than 20 institutions and drew on research on effective teaching and active learning to inform the design of the process and rubric. Class observation represents the first phase of this broader effort.

Two Types of Class Observation

Formative Class Observation

Contact: Center for Teaching and Learning

Formative version of class observation is available on an opt-in basis. This process is designed to support reflection and preparation and may be facilitated by peer faculty or the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL).

Mandatory Class Observation

Contact: Office of Assessment

Mandatory class observation applies to tenure-track faculty and is designed to provide structured information as part of review processes. The Office of Assessment supports the coordination of the process.
